Error 500

I recently traded mac late 2014 27" mac desktop 5k retina to a family member. before doing so i factory reset the mac thinking it would just erase all my data from the computer and not the operating system but it erased the OS Big Sur and was downgraded to Yosemite. After trying to get it back up-to-date with the latest OS and researching every possible thing to do it will not allow me to update to anything later than OS yosemite. When trying to download an update from app store it give a error message (500 internal server error). Anyone have a better idea than the other 20 threads ive read and didnt work?

The drive was converted back to HFS Journaled with Yosemite and what to upgrade to Big Sur. Have I got the picture right ?

Suggestion as seeing several others is same boat. Upgrade to at least High Sierra first. This may present the conversion back to APFS thusly better positioning for the leap to Big Sur. Have seen others do this and it has worked. Further, worked with a person on Mojave 10.14.1 and drive had not converted to APFS and could not bet Big Sur to install always error message - Drive not in Proper File Format. Pretty sure, Big Sur expects the intended drive to be already in APFS format and does not offer the conversion from HFS Journaled to APFS.

How to get old versions of macOS and choose High Sierra. The same link will also offer a link for Big Sur. Just e certain to only use Safari to commence the download(s) as Others may not function.
