I tried to change my apple ID from an old work email account to my personal email which I've had for 20 years, but it says that email address isn't available. Why would anyone create an apple ID with an email address that has obviously only been mine? Apple ID didn't exist 20 years ago!
Apple does not have a statement about email address re-use in its documentation but from user posts to this forum there appear to be restrictions on re-using email addresses that have been used in some other context with Apple such as a rescue address or one for notifications.
