Pasting Delimited Text into Tables in Pages 11 (and Numbers 11)

Repeat of an old question: adjusting table settings- data delimiters (URL: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250570457?answerId=251092517022#251092517022

The original question was for Numbers; mine is for Pages VERSION 11. The original question was answered by "Yellowbox" for Numbers versions earlier than 11 (or maybe 10). The instructions are correct, but only down to the Row and Column Size adjuster. "Table Direction" and everything that follows that line no longer appears in Pages 11 and Numbers 11.

I've been able to paste a tab-delimited list into both Pages 11 and Numbers 11 and SOMETIMES have it fill multiple columns--but not always. Space-delimited lists do it even less frequently (in my experience).

I"ve found that the "Adjust Import Settings" business appears ONLY IMMEDIATELY after pasting a tab-delimited list into the table. And as Yellowbox said, it disappears after a few seconds. There seems to be no way to REQUEST it to appear.

Pages 11 Help has nothing on this subject, and I've been unable to find anything about it in any searches online for Pages 11 or Numbers 11. It's rather frustrating.

(Sometimes I long for WordPerfect, which did this stuff--and more--easily. It even could copy and manipulate rectangular blocks of text as if they were a table column. No thanks to Bill Gates for making Microsoft kneel on it .)

Aw, shoot, here's where I confess to my ignorance: There's a "Pages User Guide for Mac"! AND there's even one for version 11. I didn't know about either. I'd never seen any mention of a "User Guide," even when I bought a big screen iMac and decided to give up on Windwoes altogether--just assumed that "Help" and this forum was what they had. User Guide! Whaddaya know?!

Not only does it exist, it even has the answer to my original question, which was "How can I make this thing sort on the second term of an email list?" --and re-do it easily at least once a year (for that particular email list).

Jumpin' Jehosaphat, what'll they do next? Why... maybe they'll just up and make a User Guide for EVERY Apple app!

In case you're as innocent as I was, you might not already know that the Pages 11 User Guide is apparently available only on the Web, at https://support.apple.com/guide/pages/welcome/mac

Yes, there often is. Scroll all the way down in the inspector pane at the right and you should see this.

HUZZAH!!! Thank you for pointing me in the right direction! You're correct: it DOES work as you said--except that in order to see the "Adjust Import Settings..." button, the table must be BOTH selected AND populated with imported data that has been pasted into the table.

Also, the term "imported" appears to include tabular data that is delineated by tabs or spaces or commas--all delineators must be the same.

That probably seems obvious--but I had a lot of trouble pasting in tabular data, regardless of the delineators, and may have had them inconsistent. At any rate, I couldn't count on the data populating the table's columns consistently. Instead, sometimes it would just stay in one column, even though what I pasted in LOOKED tabular. That was very confusing.

Furthermore, I didn't know the correct magic words to search for in Pages Help.

And FURTHER furthermore, something magical has happened to my Pages Help since I posted my query yesterday. TODAY it appears to work differently than it did yesterday. Yes, could be my memory has slipped a gear, or something--but today there's a "Pages User Guide for Mac" that I never found before. (Don't know how it turned up today, but it's here.) In i, paragraphs get highlighted when the mouse pointer hovers over them. I don't recall ever seeing that before in any Help on my iMac. (Could just be me, of course.) Here's a screenshot:

Did I just finally get tuned it? Or did the thing get updated overnight?

Anyway, what Apple could do to make finding things like this much easier would be to anticipate more thoughtfully what users might want to do and list them near the beginning of help files. Yes, they no doubt try to do that now--but I've been using, teaching, and reviewing word processors professionally since 1985, and they absolutely suck at anticipating what I might want to do.

All I wanted to do initially was sort an email address list by the second term (surname) of three terms (name surname address), with a secondary sort of the first terms. And then paste the list into an email client. That ought to be really easy--and easy to figure out.
