Podcast App need to be fixed.

Hi.

It seams that there is now no control of the podcasts I want to listen.

Up next list includes episodes I do not want to listen, and I can’t delete them.

I am all for it that there is some sort of feature that suggests new channels and episodes. I do understand this but I do think that the user, me, should be able to control what he likes to listen.

If this means that the listener does not browse new channels as often as Apple would like, there could be a separate section that suggests new channels and episodes that is based on your listening habits and also could show all the new and popular channels.

Thanks for your tips.

I still think those are more like a work around than an actual solution. I do not think that this is what you called “total control”. Thanks though for taking the time to help. Appreciate it. 👍

The Show (what you called the channel) will remain as long as you do not Unfollow it.

I get rid of episodes I want to skip in one of three ways.

  1. Set a Limit Episodes in the Show settings to a small number like Most Recent or 2.
  2. Begin to play the episode then move the slider all the way to the right.
  3. Tap the three dots to the right of any episode (circled) and check Mark as Played (arrow).
  4. free. it by limiting

You have complete control. Apple does not load your device with Shows you have not requested.

1. Unfollow Shows you do not wish to Follow by tapping the check mark in the upper right corner of any Show.

2. Only Follow Shows you wish to follow by tapping the “+” icon in the upper right corner of the Show.

3. Set up the circles in the diagram below to remove episodes already played in a show you Follow.

4. Limit episodes as necessary (arrow in right frame) so you don’t take too much storage on your device.

There’s always a frustration with a major overhaul of any procedure that we’re use to. I try to caution myself not to be too critical right away because a lot of thinking people debated the changes before making them.

A very easy way to manage your listening method is to use Stations, which is a folder of the episodes from Shows you Follow (left frame). A station might be Gardening and contain the most recent unplayed eps from related Shows (center frame). Another might be labeled Politics. I label some Stations “Daily,” “Weekly,” etc.,

Each Station has its own settings (right frame). For convenience, all the Shows I follow are in one of my Stations. Then I simply click on the first episode in the Station and the eps play in whatever sort sequence I chose.

incidentally, 1rdrd, when you mark an episode as played, it does disappear from the Show or Station list, provided your choice in settings.

Nikkinen,

I signed on to register the same concern as you. The new version of Podcasts is a disaster. I wish apple would go back to the previous version where it was clear which episodes were downloaded or not, and there was an easy way under each particular Show to delete whatever episodes–played or not–you didn't want keep or even see in list. And I don't think cyberbiker's workaround actually works. If I go to a particular Show and mark an episode as played, episode remains in the list and there is no way that I can see to delete the episode from the list.

Here's hoping apple will fix this disaster.

Thanks for the response. You have a more charitable view of apple than I do. I think the developers make changes for no reason and manage to break what doesn't need fixing trying to be clever.

A couple of things. First, your screen shots look nothing like the Podcast app on a Mac; I don't see how to replicate what you have. And the Stations option, even if it were on the Podcast app ona Mac, is way more complicated and doesn't really do what I want. The preferences tab in Podcasts on the Mac has very few choices; I don't know how to paste a screenshot into this message, but the only choices in the advanced tab under preferences are (and each option has a box to check or uncheck);

Library:

Sync follows across devices

Automatically delete played episodes

Show Siri suggestions in app

Saved Episodes

Download episodes when saving

Episode display

Hide Played Episodes

That's it.

Second, I don't want to automatically hide played episodes. Some I want to keep even if played (and be able to see that I have them); others I want to delete and get off the list whether played or not. So far as I can tell the new version does not give me that option.

Is it too much to ask to be able to click on a show, see the episodes for that show only, and manually decide which to keep (and therefore sync across devices)? Apparently to apple it is.

I asked and answered this question myself just today... I download all my podcast episodes on the computer then sync.

On the phone -> Podcast -> Library -> Downloads -> Edit - Group By Show

This now shows the icons for each show and how many episodes I downloaded for each. It does NOT show all the extra unplayed episodes which is what I (and it seems a lot of people) wanted.

If you hit the icon of the show it lists them from newest-to-oldest. Also, if your show doesn't have any episodes downloaded it won't appear on the icon page until you do download one.

I can’t speak knowledgeably about podcasts on a Mac. I only use the iOS Podcasts app because I listen to podcasts off and on throughout the day as I’m running around and the iPhone is always with me.

Unfortunately, the current Podcasts app lets you see ALL the episodes in a Show or just the Unplayed ones. To keep one you’ve already played in the show list the only solution is to mark it as unplayed or mark it as Saved.
