Why do I have more contacts on my iPhone than in iCloud?

My iPhone 5S tells me I have 125 contacts, iCloud says 778. Why?

iPhone 5s, iOS 12

Ok that makes sense now. You need to see if more than one account is storing contacts.

Go to Settings, Contacts, Accounts

Tap on each account other than iCloud

See if contacts is on (green) for any of those other accounts

If so, and if you don’t want those extra ones, turn them off and do not leave them on the phone if asked.
