As an initial step, which may resolve the problem - is to disable automatic update of Apps in iPad settings, return to the Settings top-level, the exit/close settings. Next, force-restart the iPad:

Please clarify; are you having difficulties with auto-update of Apps already installed on your iPad - or with your System Software Updates?
Assuming that you are having difficulties with automatic update of Apps already installed, ensure that Automatic Downloads are enabled in Settings (shown here disabled):
Both Apps and App Updates are turned on in setting under App Store. I also own a second generation Ipad Pro and it updates automatically without any issues. Updated six manually last night on my 3rd generation Ipad Pro and did two more this morning. Why won't it update my Apps automatically?
Tried this yesterday morning after updating the current apps. Last night had 5 more updates that weren't automatically updated, so the procedure did not work.
