My mac doesn't have the option to update operating system

I purchased this MacBook pro around 2014/2015 and it does not give me the option to update my OS now. I am currently using OS sierra but need to update so I can open more updated work documents in apps like pages. How can I update my OS when there isn't the option to in the app store or system preferences?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.12
