If you are not running macOS Catalina (10.15.n) or later, then you cannot update/install current versions of Pages, Numbers, or Keynote from the Mac App Store. Older versions of these applications located on older operating systems may pop a dialog indicating that updates are available — but the criterion of the first sentence takes precedent.
