what kind of external hard drive should i use to back up my MacBook pro

I want to back up my MacBook pro, then erase the content and all files so i can give it to my grand daughter............ Any ideas what hard drive will do the trick

Pretty much any hard drive with adequate space. Get two because if you delete the original then your backup is no longer a true backup. A backup is having multiple copies and drives can die. Depends upon how much you value the files.
