Portrait mode depth of field editing on Photos for Mac - Big Sur

Hello all -

I have an iPhone 12 Pro. I took a portrait mode photo and sent it to my dad. He imported the photo into Photos for Mac (iMac running Big Sur). In his photos the photo has the "Portrait" label on it. When you go to the editing in Photos on the Mac there are no tools shown for editing the depth of field (f stop, aperture, background blur, bokeh, etc.). I have tried texting the photo, air dropping the photo, creating a shared album - same result. I have looked everywhere in his Photos app on his Mac - those particular editing tools are nowhere to be found. I know those editing tools are available in Photos for Mac - I just can't get them to show up on my dad's Mac!

Thank you in advance for any help!

John

John, try to send the unmodified original of the Portrait photo to your Dad.

All Sharing options will share the rendered photo, not the original file with the embedded depth Map. Can you download the original file from your iPhone to a computer (using a USB cable) and then mail the original file (compressed as a zip file)? Do you also have a Mac?

Thank you very much for your quick reply.

I do have an older iMac (maxed out at High Sierra) running Photos version 3 which I'm guessing does not support the portrait mode editing feature. Understood about sharing the photo dropping the depth map. I will try another method of transfer to my dad's Mac and see if the editing options show up.

Léonie,

After reading your reply, as a test on my iPhone I texted a portrait photo to myself. I saved the photo from the text message to my photos. While the original portrait photo in my photos has the depth map information and the aperture information can be edited on my iPhone, the same photo saved from the text message does not contain the depth map information and no portrait editing tools are available on my iPhone. Per your explanation - this answers the question as to what is happening with the file transfer to my dad's iMac via text and other sharing methods - thank you. I am working on the usb - zip transfer to my dad's iMac just to see if it works.

Thanks again - I really appreciate your help in understanding what was happening.
