Saying "it won't install" does not help with understanding why, or any response that may have appeared when you tried the upgrade. Was this by clicking Software Upgrade, or did you download an updater from Apple's download site?

You will need to free up 35.5 GB of available storage before you can upgrade your Mac. That is Available storage read from a Get Info panel after you click on your Macintosh HD icon on the Desktop and press ⌘+i. Do not trust the menu : About This Mac : Storage panel for this information.
