installing on macintosh hd

I want to ask the community whether what I experienced yesterday - a sudden 'installing on Macintosh HD' - is normal or malicious in anyway.

Yesterday while I was using my MacBook, the screen suddenly switched off and jumped to a 'installing' screen - 'installing on Macintosh HD' (see below the image). It took around 15-20 minutes to complete the whole process and after that, things seem to return to normal.

I wasn't sure what exactly was installed and why this happened. Is this standard process that can be expected? I was not even given any notice, choice or indication before this started, and I didn't have the setting on for automatic updates.

I am concerned whether my MacBook was compromised in anyway.

Can anyone advise or share their experiences please?

Do you have this checkbox checked in your System/Software Update preference pane?

Thank you everyone for your comments

To Old Toad -

This is the weird part. It was not ticked - i.e. at the same time I still have notifications asking me whether I want to update my iOS system to Catalina 10.15.7. So this 'installing on Macintosh' experience seems to be something different. I am concerned whether my MacBook has been compromised or hacked etc.

Any advice, thoughts or experience sharing are welcome.

Again go back to System Preferences> Software Update even though Automatically keep my mac up to date is unchecked,

click on the Advanced button and see if other automatic options are checked.

If any options in the Advanced section are checked they can override the system and start installing updates

without any input from you, this is what probably happened to you.
