I use the free Ad and Stuff Blocker extension from the Mac App Store. It downloads as an application, and installs/updates the extension once the application is run. It provides for white-listing, but I never do that. Using it in Safari 14 and 13.1.2.
One can right-click on the Safari refresh icon and have the option to reload the current web page without the content blocker.

Hello;
I have tried a few, some are really poor, none are really great. The best luck I have had is with ABP 2.1.4 (Adblock Plus, the legacy version as it works on Mojave. Their newer version is designed for Catalina.

I've used many of the browser-based plugin ad blockers and they're mediocre at best. I recently purchased an Eero WiFi Mesh network and they offer an add on service called Eero Secure. It's $3/month and, amongst its' other benefits, it has the 2nd best ad blocker I've ever seen in my life.

I´ve tried many blockers over the years, and have had the best experience using Safari with Ka-Block! installed, which is free from the App Store. It does a pretty good job with minimal interference, and I've been using it for some years now. But no blocker to my knowledge works 100%, and ask any two Mac users and you'll get two different answers to your question! Good luck! Regards, Ian.
