What (if any) ad blockers might work with my (older) MacBook Pro running Safari Version 11.1.2 (?).

I will search the Apple Store as you suggested:
"Ad and Stuff Blocker " free and seems to work well on High Sierra and up. Can not speak directly to OS X 10.11 functionality.
