Broken screen, transferring and backing up data to set up new phone

My husband’s phone screen is completely cracked and broken to the point he cannot even type in his passcode or see anything on the screen, just has colored vertical lines. We tried activating Voiceover which did not help. He has a new phone we ordered but we are trying to figure out if there is a way to back up his broken phone on the iCloud. We plugged it into the computer but cannot open the phone or type in the code on the screen. Is there a way around this?

Thanks for your help!

Hopefully, he's been making regular backups to either iTunes (or Finder in macOS Catalina) or to iCloud all along. That way he could restore from one of these backups to his new phone. if he did not make any recent backups, or any at all, then there would be no way to do a restore from them. Without access to the phone to unlock it, he's pretty much out-of-luck. However, it may be possible (once they reopen) to make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store to see if they can assist you with this.
