My apple watch is at version 5.3.4 and my iphone 6 has all updates current to 12.4.4. I tried upgrading just the watch to version 6 through the iphone but it will not upgrade. How can I update just the watch?

You can't from an iPhone 6; if you pair it to a newer iPhone and then update it, you won't be able to pair it with the iPhone 6 afterwards.
