Updating 2017 MacBook Air to Catalina

I have a 2017 MacBook Air currently running Mojave 10.14.6.

I need to update to Catalina (to fix a glitch with Skype for Business, hopefully), but when I go either to the app store or System Preferences to do a software update, I get a message saying that my computer is already up to date and there is nothing to update. How can I update to Catalina?

Hello lucy152,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

I understand from your post that you would like to update your MacBook Air to macOS Catalina, but both the Mac App Store and System Preferences say it is up to date. Try updating while your Mac is in safe mode. This article will provide you with the steps necessary to restart in safe mode:

When you open the App Store program, click in the search bar and type Catalina. That should take you to the Catalina download page. If it does not then follow jeremy_v's suggestion to restart in Safe Mode and then try searching for Catalina in the App Store again.
