ipod classic won't add new new music or playlists

why won't my iPod Classic update any new songs or playlists? I just upgraded to Catalina and trying to use Finder. It all looks correct and I can see the new playlists but the "apply" button is greyed out

Actually, I found that by restoring the iPod I could update all after an initial full sync. It took a while but hopefully it continues to work. I wish there could just be a simple explanation from Apple when things like this change
