Just updated my gmail account. But how I update the new password in Mac email?

Hi, my MacBook Pro is running 10.14.6. I just updated the password for my gmail account. When I opened the Mac mail, it prompts: "Enter the password for the account ..." and there is a button labeled "Open Safari". I clicked the button and it grayed out, but nothing else happened.

I then went to Mail->Preferences->Accounts and click the account. There is no field for password.

How should I update the password in Mac mail?

Thanks

I have verified that this is caused by Gmail's 2-step verification process.

Here is how to solve it: (for your reference in the future)

  • Login to gmail account page and create an "app password" for Mac Mail.

This password is for Mac Mail to use for the specific gmail account.

  • Add the gmail account back to Mac Mail.

Thanks.

I tried modify the entry in Keychain Access but the issue still exist.

So I decided to delete the account from Mac Mail and re-add it back. After I delete it, when I try to add the account back as a "Google Account", I got the same pop up windows prompt me:

Google requires completing authentication in Safari

After authentication, set up will continue in Internet Accounts.

There is also the same button in the pop-up windows, "Open Safari". After I click it, it just grayed out and doing nothing.

BY THE WAY, I have gmail 2-step verification enabled. Is Mac Mail unable to handle this?

This is the issue I posted about!

This is what I had to do (This is a workaround not a solution)

In google

1.) Turn off 2-step Verification

2.) Turn on Less secure app access

3.) In Gmail settings go to Forwarding and POP/IMAP and enable POP

In Apple Mail

1.) Add Account - use Other Mail Account fill with your credential - Sing in - it will get rejected

2.) change the incoming to POP

That should work just for mail, no calendar, notes or anything else

HTH
