Clicking to start animation just takes me to the next slide

Hi, I am trying to use a "spinner" in Keynote. The way the keynote is set up, I should be able to click on the spinner to make it rotate, then click again to stop it. However, when I click on the spinner, I'm being taken to the next slide. Is there a way to solve this issue? Ideally, I would like to disable trackpad for advancing through slides and designate using the arrow keys, leaving the clicking of the trackpad to start the animation, but honestly, I am willing to try anything at this point! Thank you!

I should be able to click on the spinner to make it rotate, then click again to stop it.

Left clicking the mouse on an object does not start an effect, instead it advances to the next slide or animation, right clicking the mouse goes to the previous slide or to the first animation on the slide.

The only occasion clicking on an object has a function is when a hyperlink is attached to that object, however hyperlinks can not start an animation (Format > Add Link)

As animations must fully complete the effect before another slide or animation can be played, what you are trying to do is not possible in Keynote.
