New M5 iPad Pro, 1TB restarts after shutting down with power button. Ipad OS26.2

Hi there,

New, well a week old M5 iPad Pro restarts after shutting down via the power button on top right of screen. Shutting down via Settings>General>Shut Down does not cause the iPad to restart. I’ve tried hard reset via volume up, volume down, holding power button without success. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Sounds like you are not actually shutting the iPad down, but instead putting it to sleep using the top (power) button. Simply pressing the top (power) button on it's own does NOT power the iPad OFF. To properly shut the iPad down:

Turn iPad on or off (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  • Turn on iPad: Press and hold the top button until the Apple logo appears.
  • Turn off iPad: Simultaneously press and hold the top button and either volume button, then drag the slider.

Source of above procedure

Note that in any power OFF instance (physical button sequence or from Settings), you will be required to drag (the) slider to power it off. If you do not see the "slide to power off" with the slider, you are not powering the device OFF.

Update: Spoke with Apple support regarding: issue. Did some troubleshooting with the tech and was told that the issue is most likely hardware, pointing to volume up or power button sticking when pressed and that one of these is causing the iPad to restart.

Since I bought it less than a week ago, Genius Bar visit with possible replacement being a refurb unit, I elected to bring the iPad back and exchange for a new one. New device was running iPad OS 26.0 and everything worked as it should on power down. However, after updating to 26.2, the exact issue returned on the new device. Definitely a software issue as compared to hardware.

Anyone else running 26.2 on a newer iPad and seeing the same issue? Interested to know.

Thanks!

Are you experiencing this issue while your iPad is connected to its USB-C Power Adapter - or when just running on battery power?

If the issue occurs while connected to a Power Adapter, the restart issue may be due to the Power Adapter and not the iPad. When connected to a USB-C Power Adapter that supports USB PD (Power Delivery), it should be possible to fully shut-down the iPad. However, if the USB PD power supply is unstable - or is disconnected and reconnected to the iPad - the iPad will automatically restart.
