SMS read status not syncing to Mac

SMS messages show as unread on Mac after being read on iPhone

iMessage (blue bubble) read status syncs correctly across devices.

However, SMS/MMS (green bubble) messages remain marked as unread on my Mac, even after I’ve read them on my iPhone. The messages themselves arrive correctly, but the read/unread state does not update on the Mac.

Text Message Forwarding is enabled for my Mac, and both devices are signed into the same Apple ID. Restarting devices and syncing Messages in iCloud does not change this behavior.

Is this expected behavior or a known limitation of Text Message Forwarding for SMS/MMS messages?

If so, is there any way to keep SMS read status in sync across iPhone and Mac?
