Logic Pro playing needed audio outside of any region. Does not export with region.

I am having trouble in Logic Pro with the sound playing beyond the region, while the playhead is in white space. The recorded audio outside the region is audio that I need. I try to drag the region out to include more, and it only jumps back further. I am using the latest version of Logic Pro with a MacBook Pro M4 Pro. How do I make that audio that is obviously still in the system be part of a region? There is no evidence of it in the timeline. When I import a track from another project, it plays fine. I tried restarting the computer and importing the tracks into another project, with the same results.
