I am trying to use old macBook air (circa 2019?). It won't accept my current apple password or let me change the password. any suggestions?

Unless the MacBook Air is using your Apple Account as the login credentials it's no surprise it won't accept the password for it. Usually the login user account and your Apple account are different things.

Is the Mac actually connected to Wi-Fi?
If you have not used it in 5 years, it may not be able to connect to the internet.
actually I may have entered the correct ID's and password now it's saying unable to verify your internet connection but I am using a different laptop right next to the mac which has internet and I also have enabled personal hotspot with my iphone which is also right next to the laptop but because I can't get past the first screen I can't tell for sure if the macbook has internet connection
Edit - duplicated the good guidance offered by @Phil0124. 🙂
I haven't used this macbook for over 5 years and I guess I don't remember the necessary password or apple ID. Is there an alternative buying a new laptop?
