Something here doesn't stack up...

If the iPad was setup from your iPhone - and the iPhone bears no relationship whatsoever to your former employer - then the new iPad will also have no relationship with your employer.

If instead the new iPad was setup using the work iPad and QuickStart, then the management profile present on the work profile may have transferred to your new iPad.

Either way, if the new iPad claims ownership by your [former] employer - and you are unable to remove the management profile from the iPad by following the directions already provided - you have no alternative than to seek assistance from your employer's IT Department.

Contributors here will not be able to resolve this issue - and with a management profile present, Apple will similarly not provide assistance.

Assuming that the iPad is not centrally managed (or owned) by your former employer, signing-out from the currently signed-in AppleID (now known as your Apple Account) should be straightforward. If instead the iPad is centrally managed by your former employer, you will require assistance from the Administrator responsible for managing the device.

To sign-out from the current AppleID:

Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > Sign Out

During sign-out you will be presented with the option to delete or keep a copy of associated iCloud data. After you have successfully signed-out, you can simply sign-in again with your private AppleID credentials.

In more detail...

Change AppleID Account

If you do wish to change and use an entirely different AppleID, first ensure that you have disabled the Activation Lock that will otherwise cause difficulties in the future. You can disable the Activation Lock by disabling the Find My service from iPad/iPhone settings before trying to use a different AppleID account:

Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > Find My > Find My iPad - set to OFF

Having disabled the Activation lock, you can now sign-out from your old AppleID:

Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > Sign Out

Presumably you’ll want to keep any iCloud data that is locally stored on your iPad. If so, accept the opportunity to keep a local copy of your data (e.g., Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Keychain Passwords etc.) - as otherwise this data will be wiped from your iPad as you sign-out from iCloud.

Also ensure that you have signed-out from Messages and FaceTime:

  • Settings > Messages > Send and Receive > [AppleID] - scroll to the bottom where you will find your signed-in AppleID highlighted in blue text; tap and select Sign Out

  • Settings > FaceTime > [AppleID] - again, scroll down the page to find your signed-in AppleID highlighted in blue text; tap and select Sign Out

After signing out, a restart of your iPad/iPhone is recommended:

Restart your iPad - Apple Support

Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

After restarting, you can sign-in to your new AppleID account from iPad settings - and also sign-in to Messages and FaceTime if necessary. Any iCloud data that you saved to your device during the previous sign-out will be merged with your new AppleID account.

when I try to setup my new iPad it says this ….

this iPad is owned by Welsh government digital learning division.

I have been in touch with them and after 7 weeks of messing around I finally met with someone from IT with my old iPad and I signed out of the iPad.

Do I need to do more than sing out then?

Sorry, I’m so done with this and just really need to be clear when I go back to my old employer to say what I need them to do.

thank you so much for your support

Ok. My old employers are trying to wash their hands of it now but I won't be able to use my new iPad unless this is sorted.

So, my best bet is to try and arrange another meeting with them where they bring the old iPad and delete my profile from the iPad settings?

They have met with me once asking me to sign into the iPad so they could then delete me but it didn't work.

I don't believe it's my fault as I wasn't told when given the iPad to use that I shouldn't put my Apple ID onto it. Should I have known this though?

You should have used your own iPad exclusively with your own AppleID. Signing-in to your privately owned iPad with your work AppleID (that effectively belongs to your former employer) was your downfall.

Using personally owned devices in relation to your employment, or with your employer's network, is always a bad idea. Notwithstanding the technical implications of doing so, it is acknowledged good practice to keep private and business use entirely separate. At the very least, this maintains good data and systems hygiene.

Many employers forbid use of personal devices for purposes in connection with their business - or, where permitted by policy, may require control of the personally owned item.

When you signed-in to your employer (from your post, this assumed to be the Welsh Government Digital Learning Division), a device management (MDM) profile was likely installed.

Devices that are configuration locked by an MDM platform can usually only be released from central management by the platform that manages the device. Be aware that Apple will not assist with removal of management profiles.

Unless you are lucky - and have the option to delete the profile from iPad Settings - you’ll need to seek assistance directly from the System Administrator who manages the device. Otherwise, the device will remain under the control of the managing entity, rendering the device potentially useless to you.
