Image Capture Can't Find Scanner

I have an HP Officejet 5740 multifunction printer. Both printer and scanner worked fine prior to updating to macOS Tahoe. After the update Image Capture continued to work fine with the printer but failed to find the scanner built into the printer. It said:

DEVICES [0]

SHARED HP Officejet 5740 series

Error Message is: Failed to open a connection to the device (-21345)

I installed the latest available macOS HP drivers to no avail but downloaded the HP.app from the AppStore and found that it could see and use the scanner just fine. Rather clunky though so I'd prefer Image Capture.

My iMac communicates with the HP device via WiFi so neither printer nor scanner functions have ever been via a direct USB connection.

Has Tahoe hidden this scanner from me for some reason?

If you are seeing it in image capture under devices, then it isn’t being hidden from you. There’s a comm error between your computer and the scanner.

As to the drivers, while it is one device, there are two separate drivers, one for each component. The printer side is likely AirPrint compatible, and it sounds as if the scanner side is ICA compatible since it does show up in image capture. I guess my first try would be to restart both the printer and the computer. A second try would be start up your Mac in safe mode and then restart normally.

I do remember something about an encrypted communication error between devices, but I don’t know of any details or if this might be related

Are these the instructions that you folllowed:

To update the firmware on your HP OfficeJet 5740, you can use the printer's built-in Embedded Web Server (EWS) (recommended for network users) or a USB flash drive, both requiring you to first download the latest firmware file from the official HP support website. Ensure your printer is connected to the internet and then follow the EWS steps in your web browser, or use the USB method via the printer's control panel after loading the file onto the drive, always making sure the printer is ready and rebooting it after the process.

It appears that there is only generic support for this device under MacOS. The HP web site offers no HP drivers for MacOS, only Linux and Windows ...

You can use the generic drivers available from Apple but those might not support scanning.

Vuescan provides drivers for many scanners and does support your device:

This device seems quite old and it might not be directly supported under Tahoe (although it still may work), I found this on its HP support area:

Those are ancient MacOS versions.

HP also says this about this device:

Compatible operating systems

Windows 11; Windows 10; Windows 8; Windows 8.1; Windows 7; Windows Vista; macOS X 10.7 Lion; macOS X 10.8 Mountain Lion; macOS X 10.9 Mavericks

It might be obsolete with respect to modern operating systems. That said, I have multifunction devices from 2010 and 2015 that still work for both printing and scanning under Sequoia. One of them however has a specific Image Capture scanning driver that is installed from the manufacturer (Epson).

Bonjour is how the printer is discovered so it can be added to the printer list. Since it shows as multifunction, it’s being discovered as a printer + scanner (and maybe fax, too, depending on the printer). AirPrint are the ‘drivers’ that run the printer and scanner when you’re using it.

I have deleted then reestablished the printer several times and even reset the printer according to Apple's instructions. The printer continues to work fine and the scanner continues to be un-findable by Image Capture. The HP.app is able to access the scanner function so I do have that to fall back on. The HP app isn't as functional as Image Capture, especially with exporting/saving images as documents but perhaps that's because I haven't yet discovered the right button.

Odd. Reading your original post, ‘Shared’ is where the scanner should show up in Image Capture (not under devices, that’s for wired connections). I wonder if you had an original connection issue and now the HP drivers are now causing an issue? Your printer launched in 2015, but I have an HP Officejet Pro 8740 that launched a hear after that, and printing and scanning work fine (I have no HP software installed).

When you first had the problem, did you power cycle the printer and try deleting and re-adding it, or were those steps only done after the HP software install?

I also did a screen video of the relevant window

What window do you consider relevant?

Image Capture recognizes your scanner, thus it is Image Capture Architecture (ICA) compliant and there is some driver present.

Your problem is in the communication between the Mac and the scanner portion of the device which could be an outdated ICA driver.

HP may have an updated ICA driver, but they bundle everything together making it difficult to determine if there is one in the package.

AirPrint, or any printer driver, has nothing to do with scanning even if the two functions are welded together in a single container.

Thanks all for the many suggestions. This printer shows up as "bonjour multifunction" with no mention of air print that I can find. I have deleted then reestablished the printer several times and even reset the printer according to Apple's instructions. The printer continues to work fine and the scanner continues to be un-findable by Image Capture. The HP.app is able to access the scanner function so I do have that to fall back on. As suggested I tried to update the printer's firmware. First, I discovered the IP address and then entered it into a Safari window. The macOS Tahoe put up warnings but allowed me to attempt access. However, that attempt was unsuccessful. Yield:

System Error

Network connection error. Check network and try again.

This is all via WiFi and I was assured by HP that a direct connection was not necessary as long as the printer and computer are on the same network which they are,

I believe that the HP Officejet 5740 supports AirPrint, so no drivers should be needed. First step in troubleshooting would be to delete the printer then re-add it.

Else, you can reset the printing system (then re-add as above).
