In doing some more reading online re: this problem, is was posted on the web that one should have in Finder preferences, CD's, DVD's, and iOS Devices option checked - which I did - on my Mac and my wife's. So I unchecked the option re-started Finder and checked the option and still nothing - same issue - update not recognized. So leaving the option checked, I then unchecked Bonjour Devices ( which im not sure why it was checked to begin with). I restarted Finder and tried the update via USB again and it worked. So doing one or both of these tasks fixed the not being able to recognize updates issue....

True ?

So use your cellular data to update the iPhone if you have an issue.

Unplug from the Mac, turn off Wifi

iPhone>Settings>General>Software Update> "Download and Install" >>Use Cellular Data — YES

If you want a current backup manually do that first...

I updated iPhone wirelessly as iOS 26 was not being detected via cable in finder. MBP M3 Max, 2023 - now on Tahoe 26.1. My iPad Pro is last device still on 18.7.2, iPad Pro 3rd gen, 11 inch. Still not able to do that one for some reason with cable - iOS 26 not being detected. See here: IOS not being detected. I stated it when I discovered it was an iOS detection issue.

I know I can update the iPad wirelessly. BUT, trying to determine whats stopping the update from being detected via cable....

Most of the possible solutions so far have been beating on the update pathways, making sure they were up to the job, such as changing connection to Ethernet.

--------

One possibility is that the device itself (iPhone or iPad) is either:

• confused about what the correct latest version is.

• fails (silently) when it tries to ask for a later version number.

Consider doing a power-down Restart of the device. Then ask the device itself (through its settings) what is the latest version available. if no joy, connect to the Mac and ask that way.

"this model mbp does not have a cat5 port. I have to use some type of adapter , hence the dongle."

-------

Getting CAT5 Cable:

"Dongle" or "Adapter", call it want you want to; nonetheless, it is what to use, if you want to proceed with Ethernet. Which type to get depends on the port of your Mac: USB-A or USB-C

so off topic - not sure why these posts are out of order - confusing!

Anyhow, it seems im the only apple user with this issue according to apple senior advisor. I have restarted all devices multiple times during update attempts. Power cycling and by rebooting. No joy. I also just created a test account on Mac and tried and got this:

Seems like its not going to work.
