How do I offload the photos library on an iPhone so I can free up storage for an os update?

If you are using iCloud Photos, make sure Optimized Storage is turned on where the device storage is automatically managed by offloading the high resolution version of photos and keeping only the smaller thumbnails to reduce space.

If you are not using iCloud Photos, then you would have to manually save those photos elsewhere before deleting from your device to free up space, or even another computer.

Ir you had deleted photos and you want them permenently removed before the 30 days that you normally have in case you change your mind, then remove from the Recently Deleted Album in the Photos app.

And finally, do a Force Restart to do some house keeping.
- Press and quickly release Volume Up
- Press and quickly release Volume Down
- Press and hold Side button until the Apple logo appears. This may take up to 15 seconds while holding the side button and you have to ignore anything else on the screen until you see the Apple logo. If it does not appear then try again as it may take a couple of attempts to get the speed and sequence of the key presses correct.
