Just got new IMac 24 (Sequioa 15.3.1) and the changed picture icon on folders keep disappearing after a couple of hours. Worked before like a dream on MacSierra for years but here it just doesn't, now matter how many different ways I try to input jpeg,png files etc. Any solutions out there?
First, update to Sequoia 15.7.2. !5.3.1 is far behind with security and other fixes.
Will do. Still find it odd that after using Mac OS High Sierra for a number of years without a problem, the newer system somehow fails to complete this simple task. It was suggested that some synchronising app/drive somehow looses thie new icons... Trying verify and trace which drive is doing which synchronising...
Just found out that while running Google Drive it immediately threw out all my newly inserted folder icons!!! Any way to stop this?
I've moved on to Tahoe but I have no problems customizing folders in Tahoe or previous versions of macOS, including Sequoia.
My guess is that's something you will have to ask Google support about.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.
NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;
• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)
• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
• Disables user-installed fonts
• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files
NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.
