Missing manually added geo-tags in Photos

geo-tags that i manually tagged are missing

I have imported a lot of photos that I took with my old Nikon DSLR.

Over the years I I have spent considerable time figuring out where the pix were shot and assigning geo locations to those images in Photos.

Some of those locations have remained but many, many others that I am certain were geo tagged no longer have any location.

How can I guard against this?

Which system version are you using? If your Mac is running macOS 10.15 or later, and you are importing the photos to your Photos Library as referenced files (referencing them in the original location and not importing them into the library), Photos may not be able to show the photos on the locations map. This is one of the known bugs with respect to referenced files. See: Problem in Photos 5.0: Referenced Photos do not show in the Places Album - Apple Community

Another way of losing location data is to transfer photos using a shared album. On some system versions the location data will have been stripped from the shared photos for privacy reasons.
