iPhone 17 pro max and AirPods Pro 3 announcement volume

I’m unable to adjust the volume of the announcements or text to speech volume in my AirPods with this new phone. They are way too loud. I’ve gone through settings to lower the volume there and I’m able to lower the volume as it’s happening with my phone volume control but it doesn’t save my preference, the next announcement or text blasts into my ears again. Is it a compatibility issue and I need new AirPods version?
