I have tried everything suggested to get my hotmail to work in the Apple Mail account. I get the message "Enter the password for user 'myname@hotmail.com'" and "can't connect to the account "Hotmail". enter the password for the user .... Unable to verify account name or password. I have even tried changing my password. I can access my hotmail only by going directly to the Microsoft/mail site. My other email accounts work just fine.

Do you have 2FA set up to use hotmail?
Reach out to their support and let them know the issue you're having.
Until you get your Hotmail working in Mail you can use the Outlook.app that is in the App Store for free.
Even for a person that has both a Hotmail and Outlook email address it still took me ten minutes to jump through Microsoft's hoops. My suggestion at this point is create another email address in Outlook so in. future if this sort of thing happens again you can use the Outlook address to get into Hotmail and the Hotmail address to get into Outlook.
