Disappeared message now has question mark.

I have a message thread to myself just to keep various articles, info,etc. Lately many of these are just showing an empty message box with a question mark in it. Is it possible to recover these? This shouldn’t be a storage issue as I still have storage on my phone and in my iCloud.
