Constantly get message that I need to download languages, despite them being downloaded and all settings (to UK) being correct .
have re-paired airpod, ans deleted and reinstalled Translate app.

It turned out that I just needed to download US English (which, being in the UK, I have no need of at all) - all the other languages were downloaded, but not that one.
Baffling choice by Apple.
Side note: the message nagging about downloading languages cannot pronounce 'Live' properly, insisting it rhyming with give, rather than hive.
