Apple EarPods not resuming playback on iPhone 16

If I am listening to music or a podcast and push the "pause" button on my earpods, it pauses fine, but sometimes when I push it again to play, it won't resume playback. If that happens I have to pull my phone out and push the "play" button on my phone screen. Sometimes that doesn't work so I have to pull the headphone plug out of the phone and plug it back in before it will work again. This is my second pair of Apple Earpods and it behaves in the exact same way. I have an iphone 16 with Apple earpods.
