Photos - iPhone shows "New Items" but photos are already in Photoslibrary

Trying to clean up my photos after many years.

Plugged my iPhone in to my MacBook Air.

Started Photos app on my MacBook Air.

iPhone says I have more than 4000 "New Items". I think not.

I selected a photo that I'm positive was taken in 2002 and imported it

It disappeared from my "New Items" list

I then checked my Library and sure enough the image appears, along with what appears to be a copy of the same picture.

I then ran View>Utilities>Duplicates on my Library.

No results.

Can anyone explain any possible reasons for this behavior and how I might be able to, truly, eliminate the duplicates?

TIA - jP

Is it possible that you used a different method to import that photo back in 2002? Over the years, there have been reports that different import methods can create slight differences in how photos are imported that can interfere with the detection of duplicates on subsequent import attempts. There was an import method called My Photo Stream that did not always mix well with cable-based imports, as I recall.
