2nd Generation Apple TV won't access the itunes store

I have a second generation Apple TV that I use primarily for streaming music in my home gym. Its been awhile since I last worked out but today, I started the Apple TV and basically got the "New Apple TV" screen.

Ok, so stranger things have happened. I went through the process of setting up the A-TV again: Connected to network / set timezone etc. But when trying to sign into the Itunes store - I get a "cannot connect to itunes store" error.

I know my ID and password (used them to log in here)

I know the A-TV is connected to the network/Internet (Downloaded latest update as part of my troubleshooting)

I set the right time zone for my area

unplugged my router and mesh system and rebooted the A-TV several times - same results

I've connected to the itunes store with other A-TVs I have on the same network: no problem

Ive connected to the itunes store with my phone and this macbook pro I'm typing at - no problem

I guess my question for all you folks who likely know more about apple products than I do:

Is this 2nd Gen A-TV just too old to interface with the latest itunes store or is there something else I can try to trouble shoot?

I hate to think it is EOL, but I'm guessing thats the case...
