Resetting iMessage background without deleting messages on iPhone

I changed the background for mine and my boyfriend’s text messages when he still had an iPhone , but he switched to pixel and now I can’t change the background back to default. I know it will reset if I delete our text thread, but I don’t want to delete years of text messages. Any ideas?
