I want to add captions to photos in the Photos App on an iPad mini (5th generation). It has IOS 18 7 1 but the "Add a caption" window that everyone mentions does not appear.

Pictures that are transferred through a cable from a computer, usually by iTunes, can be shown by Photos, but they're not "owned" by Photos. So these pictures can't be edited or deleted by Photos. The idea is that they are kept on the computer and transferred to the iDevice temporarily. These pictures usually have the trashcan grayed out, and they won't do any sort of editing. Are these the pictures that you can't add captions to?
If you want to save some of these non-deletable pictures, then you can use "Share" to save them to Files. Then re-import them from Files to create fully useable versions.
Let us know if that's it…

Hooray! I've tried using Snapdrop to transfer to the iphone and I can now add a caption. Many thanks for your help and advice.
I'm pretty sure you're right! I think the photos on both ipads that cannot have captions were put there by cable using anytrans or similar. The ones my wife can add captions to were airdropped from mine. Thank you so much for your advice - much appreciated.

Do be careful. Photos deals with images, not files, and 3rd party apps often get it wrong and can corrupt the Photos database. SnapDrop looks suspicious to me.
To add a caption, I tap the (i) information window button
and the caption field is right under the Info title and above the date and time field.
What do you see?
