Original apple trackpad (A1399) not connecting to macbook pro m2

Hi,

When trying to pair my magic trackpad with a Macbook Pro 2022 M2, the connection doesn't seem to happen.

It will show up in the blutooth devices, and when I click connect, it doesn't then do anything. I've replaced the batteries, tried turning bluetooth on and off, removed the device and tried re-adding. It's look like it's connected once or twice, but it then doesn't work and just disconnects again.

Any ideas would be helpful! I've tried doing all the steps I can find online. It feels like a compatibility issue, which would be a huge pain to have to buy a new trackpad!
