1st Gen apple pencil not connecting to 10th Gen iPad via adapter

Problem is the title. I have a feeling it's because the pencil won't charge, but it's not broken or anything. It charged fine on my old 7th Gen iPad, but would only charge (using my phone, iPad, outlet, etc.) while the 7th Gen was on. Unfortunately, my old iPad refuses to turn on (hence the new 10th Gen) and I'm pretty sure that's why my pencil isn't charging. I have a male USB-C female Lightning adapter, and it's not the issue, since my iPad can be charged using it. I've tried to charge my pencil from an outlet, my phone, and the 10th Gen, but nothing has worked so far.
