I am afraid not. With any of the tools that will automatically remove duplicates or similar photos you are risking to lose precious photos that you would want to keep. None of the AI tools that are now available can know for sure which photos are important to you or, when comparing similar photos pick the one as a keeper, that you would have chosen.

What I am doing, when I want to weed out my photos:

  • I am saving a copy of my Photos Library on an external drive (That will only work, if you are not using iCloud Photos and "Optimize Storage"). If you are using iCloud Photos a duplicate of the library may be incomplete and it will be safer to export all photos with File > Export > export unmodified originals, in addition to the copy of the library.
  • Then, back in Photos, I mark all photos as a favorite, that are import to me, then delete summarily all photos that are not marked as favorites. To find the photos that are not favorites, I use a smart album with the rule "Photo is not favorite".

This way I can recover important photos, if I missed to mark a photo as favorite.
