Did the iPhone delete the photos itself?

I deleted a bunch of photos at once, but they were still listed as recently deleted. Today, I logged in and only 10 percent of those photos were showing, even though I had 10 days left before deletion. I didn't have a backup. So, did my iPhone delete some of the photos on its own? Is there anything I can do about this, and is there any chance I can still recover them? (I even restarted my iPhone,i have ios 17)

I've certainly never had pictures delete themselves, but with a sensitive touch screen it's pretty easy to sweep by something without knowing you did it. Just now I went to Notes and couldn't find what I was looking for because I had, without knowing, pasted other stuff over the title. Drat.

If you don't use iCloud Photos, but you have Settings>Apple ID>iCloud Backup turned on, then you may be able to recover data from the last 30 days or so. You should look here:

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support

“Restore” is what you do when you buy a new phone, so this safety, if you have it set, requires you to erase everything on your phone and replace it with the backup.

If you don't keep your own backups to an external drive, then there really isn't any place else to look.
