Downloading photos to external source

When downloading photos from my iPhone to an external source (usb/lightning connection to PC) the photos are transferred in other/new folders than I have on my phone, making it impossible to find individual photos. Is there anyway the transfer can be done so that the folders on the phone are preserved? Thanks
