Face ID sensors broken, can’t auto update apps without password

The sensors for my Face ID got damaged and I’m not intending to get that fixed, so I disabled Face ID everywhere. I made sure my App Store settings are such that free downloads do not require a password. My apps have always been set to update automatically.

Now my apps won’t update at all unless I do it manually and literally enter the password for every single update. I have gone through the process of disabling Face ID and checking every setting several times, restarting, re signing in etc. I don’t understand why Face ID should be required to continue downloading free app updates automatically.

i have an iPhone 14 Pro Max on iOS 18.6.2

I don’t understand this response. My Face ID sensors are broken. Not the Face ID functionality. The sensors themselves. I’ve disabled Face ID and gone directly to entering my password for everything so I don’t have to get my sensors replaced.

Now that I do not use Face ID, the App Store refuses to update a single app without getting my password for each and every one, requiring me to do it manually. Even an “update all” requires a password entry for each app needing update.
