How to take black and white photos on iPhone 16e?
Can I take black and white photos on my 16e? If so, I need detailed instructions on how to set this up.
Thanks

The sensors are color, so the original picture will always be color. But you can make it monochrome and adjust the contrast and brightness in the Edit Mode.
After you take the picture, go Edit
And in Adjust find the Saturation control. This makes the colors brighter or paler.
You can set Saturation to -100 and get a black and white image
And adjust Contrast, Brightness, Blackpoint, etc, to add nuance
It works pretty well!

Steps to take a new black and white photo:
Open the Camera app on your iPhone.
Tap the arrow icon at the top of the screen or swipe up on the live view.
Tap the three-rings icon to open the Filters menu.
Select a black and white filter:
Frame your subject and tap the shutter button to take the photo.
The far right icon with the 3 intwined circles. As you move the image to the left you get different filters (original, vivid, vivid warm, etc). Mono is towards the end.
In the Camera.app I am still seeing filters Silvertone etc., to take pictures as Back&White - they are still there for me on iOS 26:
Then I can select a B&W Filter
I can also add the filters afterwards in Photos from the edit tools:
But my iPhone is still an iPhone 15 Pro Max: According to the user guide they are no longer available on the iPhone 16 or later. On the newer iPhone models we are limited to the Photographic styles that I do not like at all.
See: Use Photographic Styles with your iPhone camera - Apple Support (BW)
and: Edit the Photographic Style
The old filters are only available on iPhone 16e, iPhone 15 models, or earlier. See: Edit photos and videos on iPhone - Apple Support (BW)
As I am using the filters a lot, I am dragging my feet about upgrading to a newer iPhone model. At least the filters are still there in Photos for Mac on macOS 26 Tahoe.

Where did you find the Monochrome filter?
In any case, you can always Revert to Original to get the color back and start over, if you want.
Interesting. For me it's this icon
which I had been ignoring, since I saw it had "Amber" and "Gold" and stuff like that. I just didn't go far enough. I wonder why you have "3 intwined circles" and I have a grid looking box.
I'm in iOS 18. That icon is connected to Styles, and in Settings>Camera I have Standard selected. The grid thing is like a joystick, and it adjusts "tone" and "color." It seems to always be there for me. Personally, I'd rather take the picture straight and make adjustments later.
Do you have the " three-rings icon" instead?
Thanks for the detailed information Richard. It worked!!!!
Ralf-F the icons were a little different on my phone, but I figured it out and it worked. Thanks so much for the information.
Once I hit the arrow at the top of my 16e, it takes me to the bottom where all my icons are located. I do not have an icon like the one you are pointing to.
There is not a three rings icon anymore. This is outdated
