How can I reduce Photos app storage on my iPad?

my iPad Air is only the 64GB model, so I go through sometimes to keep the storage from getting too full. But why does the photos app say it uses approx. 8 GB when I only have about 130 small(ish) pictures and no videos. I cleared out the recently deleted and turned off shared albums, which helped a bit, but it still seems like a little much…
