On Calendar app unable to permanently delete recurring events

A recurring event which I have declined still appears with crossed out lines. My only option is to “cut” the event every time it appears. The advice is to “double click “ on the event but it’s not clear how you do this on iPhone without bringing up the Wallet app. Please help!
