iPhone wallet > add > driver's license and id cards not presenting option to scan US drivers license

For users of iPhones in the United States what do you do to correct the problem where in the current iOS 18.5 wallet app under add "driver's license and id cards" it shows the Japanese citizen "my number contact" and using the mynaportal app store application and no sign of option to add a United States drivers license?

I've already confirmed that under settings > general > language and region + settings > apple id > media and purchases + app store > settings > region that all are configured for United States. I've already force quit the wallet app and restarted device and even tried switching all the above region settings to a different region, e.g. China Mainland, and then rebooting phone, opening wallet app, then switching region settings back to United States and rebooting again with no change in results.

I'm from California, a supported state for this activity, and that's what is defined anywhere in apple id or elsewhere that asks my address. This seems like its irrelevant before I've even been given the option to scan a drivers license at which point it might tell me I have an unsupported state at this time. Also I see nowhere in the region settings mentioned above that asks about your state after specifying country United States?

The only thing on this iPhone 15 Pro Max device that might have every created some affiliation with Japen was the addition of a Sucia public transit card in wallet at one time when I travelled there that still has a balance on it. Tried disabling, not deleting, access to it in the wallet and it did not affect results wrt adding California drivers license to wallet.

Hi @Chattanoogan, thanks for suggesting of doing an iOS Apple ID sign out and then sign back in to see if it would reset the wallet apps region specific behaviors in the "Driver's License and ID Cards" view. I did that and then we got the same screen you did containing the United States > California mDL Pilot option we needed to scan in drivers license.

Hi @Jeff Macdonald, note that it didn't block us for requesting this being setup when we had the CA DMV app installed and driver's license registered there already. Maybe that was the case in an earlier stage of the iOS wallet apps support for California driver's licenses.

Thanks @Chattanoogan for response and suggestions.

Under settings > privacy & security > location services > wallet I tried "Never" and "Ask Next Time or When I Share" and "While Using the App" with and without "Precise Location" enabled. Each time force quiting and restarting Wallet app to pickup the change before retesting. In all cases Wallet > + > "Driver's License and ID Cards" did not show option to scan US license.

Under Wallet > Settings > Transaction Defaults > Shipping Address I confirmed CA address was already present. Tried adding an additional one and setting it as the default and didn't change results.

So no luck on either of these fronts. Thanks for confirmation that you are also seeing the Japanese specific "My Number Contact" [ > mynaportal ] option under that menu suggesting that is expected and not some issue with my device's wallet app believing it is associated with a Japan address instead of United States one.

Thanks @Jeff Donald for the response. Drivers license is CA issued. I'm reading in search its it is supported, is that not the case?

Note that I'm not even provided the option under Wallet > + > "Driver's License and ID Cards" to scan a drivers license which is the point at which I would have expected Wallet app to tell me CA is a supported, or yet to be supported, state. Perhaps Wallet > Settings > Transaction Defaults > Shipping Address setting controls if option to add a drivers license or not is displayed.

Yes we do have the CA DMV app installed and the drivers license loaded there. This cannot be in both matte is curious as we have Android devices and having in both CA DMV app and Google pay wallet is allowed. I'll have to test removing it from CA DMV app and see if it lets us then add to Apple Wallet.

The curious thing here is how does Apple Wallet know my plan is to add the CA DMV app held drivers license in the Apple Wallet and not a different Driver's License or ID Card?

Note that reason we want the Apple wallet setup, in addition to or instead of CA DMV app, is we found out at airport this past week that you need the Apple wallet / Google pay version in order to do NFC tap to identify process in lieu of having and presenting physical driver's license card.

Hi @Jeff Donald, I tested removing CA drivers license from the CA DMV app and still no change in Apple Wallet > add > driver's license and id cards view providing option to add a drivers license. I then tested removing CA DMV app altogether and again restarting Apple wallet and still no change wrt providing option in Wallet > driver's license and id cards view wrt providing option to add a drivers license. I'm at a loss for why something that I'd expect should be super straight forward is not behaving as expected.

Thanks @Chattanoogan for sharing that screen grab as that helps a lot to see what I should be expecting to see in a properly working apple wallet setup for United States region. It confirms that it regardless of whether you are in a supported or unsupported state you still are presented with list of United States options in top level view of "Driver's License and ID Cards" screen.

In our case all I see is the "My Number Card" and without the Japan heading so not sure how we ended up in that state where it doesn't even appear to be recognizing that it should be providing United States as an option.

While this found does get flipped back and forth between Chinese and English language display settings no where else on the device or in the Apple ID is there anything but United States configured as the region.

I'm hesitant to delete the wallet app, if that is even supported vs it being an inbox vs Apple app store installed app, as I'm doubtful it will force a reset and cause it to correctly realize it should show United States options. Perhaps there is another way to reset the region it believes it is operating in. I already tried previously changing iOS and the membership and subscriptions region, to a different one and then back with no change. Although when doing those experiments its hard to know if you have to do time-consuming full iOS restart to properly test if settings like that make a difference. Maybe next move is to try signing into iOS with a different apple id although I might expect that to cause a purge of use specific settings like wallet entries.
