Unable to add my card to Apple Pay on Apple Watch

Recently my credit card was compromised through no fault of mine. Now that I have a new card I've been trying to set it up for Apple Pay on my watch. Each time I go through the watch app on my phone and input the CVV number, it comes back with an error and to try again later.

I checked with my bank and they said everything is good to go with the card. Since that's the case the issue possibly maybe lies with Apple.

Thing is I was able to add the card to my phone through the bank app. This before actually getting the physical card.

In addition I was told that watch security isn't as strong as that for the phone. To me that doesn't make sense. I don't see how one device would be more secure than other in terms of AP.

This might clear up in a few days as per bank tech support. On the other hand it might not.

The only thing I can think of would be to unpair my watch from my phone and set it up as new. Honestly not sure how to do that.

If anyone can offer some help on this, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Does your banks app have provisions to add card to your Apple Watch? The bank lowers their security requirements if you validate through their app.

Apple is not a bank and does not actively play a role in validating your identity and your device. Your bank and the Payment Network Processor (Visa, Mastercard, American Express etc.) do the account and device validation.

Is your bank receiving the account and device information from the PNO? If they aren’t, the likely cause is the PNO still has a fraud alert on your account and device information. Your bank’s support team will need to contact PNO and clear the fraud alerts.

Hi, if you read my post I explain what a PNO is. PNO’s are non-banks that operate the networks over which payments/funds move between merchants and card issuers. They are Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover in the US.

When you attempt to add a card to your Apple Wallet, the encrypted data is first sent to the PNO. If they approve, they send the data to the issuing bank and if they approve the data is sent to a Token Service Provider. The TAP decrypts the data and turns it into a dynamic payment token and sends it to Apple. When Apple receives the token they send it to your device.

If the bank is not receiving the data from the PNO, then the PNO is blocking your request. Ask the bank if they’re receiving the data from PNO. That will tell you where the issue is.

Your first sentence in your first post says fraud was identified on your account. The PNO probably still has a fraud alert on your Watch, but cleared the iPhone.

Your question in regard to security requirements is both devices have basically the same security requirements. The difference is in the implementation of biometric authentication. Your iPhone uses Face ID, your Watch requires contact with your skin/wrist. Other than the authentication method, security requirements are identical.

The fact that you can’t add the card by using the bank app indicates it’s very unlikely an Apple issue. Your request is sent to bank for approval and then they send to PNO. It sounds to me like VISA is blocking your card.

I’ve gone through the bank app to try and add the new card. Unfortunately I get the same result as going through the watch app.

Not sure what a PNO is so can’t answer anything about that.

What I know is my new card is good to go. I can use Apple Pay on my phone but not on my watch. i don’t understand the difference in the two devices. Nor does my bank.

You’re saying the issue isn’t on Apple’s end and the bank says it’s not on theirs either. Suffice to say I’m very confused.

That all said thank you for your response. I do appreciate your offering up potential solutions.

Bank says everything is good to go. They have no idea why this is happening.

My one glaring question remains is there a difference between device security? Apple Pay is Apple Pay no matter if used on your phone or watch.

Bank tech support said to wait a few days. Maybe it’ll clear up then…though they aren’t sure.

Thanks for your help anyway. Much appreciated.
